0:00.0	Thank you. Welcome to Truth for Life, where today we begin a study in the Old Testament book of Daniel.
0:32.0	Alistair Begg looks at Daniel and his friends and sees how they behaved in a culture that was opposed to their
0:38.3	religious views. He also looks at God's sovereignty on display not only during Judah's
0:45.2	captivity and exile, but also during times of blessing.
0:57.5	Daniel chapter 1, verse 1.
1:00.9	In the third year of the reign of Jeholyakim, king of Judah,
1:05.9	Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
1:11.6	And the Lord gave Jeholyakim, king of Judah his hand with some of the vessels of the house of God.
1:13.0	And he brought them to the land of Shiner to the house of his God and placed the vessels in the
1:18.6	treasury of his God.
1:21.4	Then the king commanded Ashpenas, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel,
1:26.5	both of the royal family and of the
1:28.1	nobility, youths without blemish of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with
1:34.8	knowledge, understanding and learning, and competent to stand in the king's palace, and to
1:41.0	teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.
1:45.0	The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate and of the wine that he drank.
1:50.0	They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king.
1:57.0	Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Michelle, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.
2:02.8	And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names.
2:05.4	Daniel, he called Beltaschazer, Hananiah, he called Shadrach, Michel he called Mishak,
2:12.1	and Azariah, he called Abed Nigo.
2:15.9	But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food
