One of the many wonderful benefits of learning and singing the Psalms is we have them memorized in our hearts and minds.

And God can stir us up to sing them when we need to

remind ourselves of his promises and who he is. Psalm 46 is one of those Psalms that I learned

early on as a brand new Christian. At that time, we sang the first four verses of the Psalm

accompanied by guitars. Here are the words that we sing. God is our refuge

in strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth be moved

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam, and the mountains

shake with their surgings, there is a river

whose streams make glad, there is a river whose streams make glad. I am very grateful that song

got embedded in my memory early on. It's one of the first that comes to mind when I need a reminder

that I have a refuge outside myself and I have a strength outside of the first that comes to mind when I need a reminder that I have a refuge outside myself

and I have a strength outside myself and that is Christ. He is my refuge and strength and his help

is ever present before we think to ask for it. His strength does not ebb and flow like ours. He is always and

forever our help and trouble of all kinds. He is always our refuge. A refuge is a safe place in a

dangerous world. It is a place to run for shelter and safety. It is like a strong fort.

But this fort, this refuge, is an invincible stronghold, not at all like a man-made shelter.

Isn't a refuge what we so often need?

So we must learn how to make use of this strong and secure refuge.

Do you have troubles? Then go to God your refuge, day in and day out.

Do you need strength? Then go to God your strength, day in and day out. There's never a time

when he is off duty. Verse 2 says, therefore we will not fear. That is our response to the truth that God is present and
