Automakers could face billions of dollars of fines collectively under a proposal to increase fuel economy standards.

We Work Skips interest payments and a legal win for McDonald's and Wendy's

but Burger King's battle still has to play out. GM and Stellantis could face around

$9.5 billion in overall fines under the Biden administration's

proposal to hike fuel economy standards through 2032. This is according to

Reuters citing a trade group's letter.

GM is expected to face $6.5 billion in fines,

while Stelantis could be on the hook for $3 billion.

According to a letter to the U.S. Energy Department by the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents Detroit's big three.

The group said the potential fines for not meeting the proposed corporate average fuel economy or cafe requirements are alarming.

Ford could face $1 billion in penalties while Volkswagen may have to shell out over $1 billion.

GM, Stellantis and Ford face over $2,000 per vehicle in

compliance costs which is much higher than the 546 dollars per vehicle on

average sold by other automakers.

The letter said the proposed policy would reward those auto manufacturers resisting

the transition to a fully electric future the most.

If automakers are unable to meet cafe requirements,

they can buy credits or pay penalties.

A lawsuit accusing both McDonald's and Wendy's

of misleading customers in advertising about the size of their hamburgers has been dismissed.
