When I was a very young man, I took a particular verse as my life verse.

It was 1 Timothy chapter 4, verse number 12, where Paul writes and says,

Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers,

in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

And as a very young man, that encouraged me greatly,

not to be intimidated by being young, but to make a goal to be the example of the believer,

to be the Christian God wanted me to be, even as a young man. Yet as I've grown older,

I've discovered something, and that is that truth is for every season of life.

And so while this is specifically addressing a young man, Timothy was a grown man, a young grown man at this time,

it really applies to all of us. Every one of us at every stage in life must determine what kind of believer we're going to be.

And not just to say you're saved, but to say by the grace of God, I want to be the Christian

God saved me to become. I want to be an example of the believers. There's no perfect Christian,

but there are Christians who are pursuing what the Lord wants for them in every area of their life.

The list in 1 Timothy 412 says in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith,

in purity.

He moves really from the most obvious thing that everyone sees to the secret places of our life.

The public, the private, and everything in between.

But actually, what I want to bring you to today are the verses that follow 1 Timothy

4, verse 12. You see, sometimes we look at one verse and we miss the context of the text.
