Hey, I have to put this old episode up today, because

Gilbert Gottfried died yesterday. And as I think this episode makes clear,

seeing him do stand up comedy when I was 14 years old, maybe 15, was one of the most inspiring

artistic things I ever saw in my life. That's not an overstatement or hyperbole.

David Steinberg, legendary comedian, was a really close friend of my dad's, and he was staying

at our house, because he was doing some gig at Long Island, so he stayed at our house.

And he and I would talk, and for whatever reason, David

said to me, would you like to go into the city? I want to take you to a comedy club,

because you know, I loved comedy, and he said, I'm going to take you to see something.

And it's either going to be the most brilliant thing you've ever seen in your life,

or you're going to see somebody bomb, like you read about. And that's all he said,

and Gilbert wasn't famous at this time, and we went to Caroline's, and Gilbert did the thing

that Conan O'Brien just tweeted about, where he came out and he kept saying,

stop! They were applauded, and he said, thanks for the applause, and he goes, stop,

enough, stop! And then he just kept going. For like 10 minutes, stop! It's too much!

But nobody was clapping anymore. People were just howling with laughter. And you know,

I can remember so many of the jokes he told, and I'm 55.

I mean, this was such a long time, it was 40 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday.

So, here is Gilbert Godfrey in a very early episode of The Moment. I also did Gilbert's

podcast that year, which felt to me, I felt like Gilbert and Frank made me part of the club

for that moment. It was really incredible. So, thank you to Gilbert Godfrey, his wife, Dara.
