to hear a strange noise.

It's loud, constant, rhythmic.

He follows the noise down a long dark corridor and enters an old nursery where a rocking chair is vigorously moving back and forth by itself.

Everything goes quiet.

But soon the silence is broken by a deafening deathly sound outside.

The sound of a pony trap crashing amid the shrill, unmistakable screams of a woman

and child plummeting to their death. While American ghost stories of the 1980s were becoming increasingly lavish,

visual and spectacular filled with effects and paranormal shocks.

Back in the UK, the old-fashioned British ghost story was still alive and well.

In fact, one particular story, written by Susan Susan Hill made such an impact with audiences

that it sparked not only a TV adaptation but one of the longest running stage plays
