| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the latest episode of the Shamrock, I'm Pete Samson, joined by Matt Fortuna and special guests, |
| 0:21.6 | Jesse Temple, our Wisconsin beat reporter at The Athletic, to talk all things Jack Cohn, |
| 0:26.0 | as Notre Dame picks up a graduate transfer in the quarterback market, which is something |
| 0:30.7 | they absolutely needed. And I think the Wisconsin quarterback of interest for Notre Dame fans |
| 0:36.2 | was Graham Mertz for quite a while |
| 0:38.0 | as a former recruiting target, but now it's Jack Cohen. |
| 0:40.9 | And I guess Jesse, from a big picture sense, like, what's Notre Dame getting here? |
| 0:45.9 | For people who have not seen him play, what kind of quarterback is Notre Dame adding to the roster? |
| 0:52.0 | Well, I have to say, first of all, that I think this is a total home run for Notre Dame |
| 0:55.4 | and that needed a veteran quarterback that can bring in a guy who's got 18 starts under his |
| 0:59.3 | belt. |
| 1:00.3 | And in any other situation, if Wisconsin had lost a guy who entered the transfer portal, |
| 1:06.0 | I'd probably say, I'd question what it is that somebody was getting because that means you're not good |
| 1:11.9 | enough to play at Wisconsin. That certainly wasn't the case with the Badgers. He started every |
| 1:17.1 | game last year, led him to the Rose Bowl, and what Notre Dame's getting is just a steady |
| 1:21.5 | eddy guy. That's his presence. He never gets too high, never gets too low, but his leadership really came through last |
| 1:29.4 | season, and all of his teammates praised him effusively for some of the things that he was able to do. |
| 1:35.8 | And he was in an interesting spot at Wisconsin, because when he came here, Alex Horniebrook |
| 1:40.4 | was the guy, a veteran quarterback, and in 2018, Horniebrook was dealing with some head injuries, and Cohn stepped in, and he started four games toward the end of the season. Those were the first starts of his career, and I think this will tell you a little bit about what kind of a team guy, Jack is. When Wisconsin was playing in the Pinstryple, they were about to play Miami. Cohn was sitting on four games played. Under this new NCAA rule, you can plan up to four games to retain a year of eligibility. The whole plan that year was that they were going to try to make sure that Jack wouldn't play more than four games unless absolutely necessary so he could retain that year of eligibility. He played in that bowl game. He played a fifth game, so he lost that year of eligibility because he wanted to be a part of it. He wanted to help the team as much as he could. And I think that says a lot about him because quite honestly, if I was 18 to 22 or 23, um, maybe I'd want to play in that game, but I may also consider my future and say, forget what's going on this season. |
| 2:34.4 | I want that entire extra year of eligibility, and he didn't have that. |
| 2:37.5 | So that's one thing that I think is worth noting, but just the leadership aspect and the |
| 2:42.3 | toughness too. |
