December 3, 1990.

Northwest Airlines Flight 299, aboing 727 with 154 people on board, is getting ready to

depart from Detroit's Wayne County Airport.

It's a particularly foggy day and the airport's visibility is at one quarter mile.

Over the radio, they hear a controller mention that a plane has missed its turn and is looking

for help to get where it needs to go.

By the time Flight 299 lines up for takeoff, the visibility has gotten even worse, but

they decide to take off anyway.

As they reach a speed of 100 knots, an airplane suddenly appears facing them on the runway.

With no time to react, Flight 299's right wing slices through the other aircraft.
