June 23, 1985. Air India Flight 182, a Boeing 747 with 329 people on board,

is cruising over the Atlantic Ocean 120 miles southwest of Ireland as it flies from Montreal

to London on its way to Bombay. The flight is just checked in with Shannon Air Traffic Control,

then a few minutes later it disappears from Air Traffic Control's radar.

Two other planes have converged near the Air India flight, and the radar scope has merged

all three planes into one blip on the tower's two-dimensional screen.

After a short while, the blips diverge, and only two planes reappear on the scope.

Shannon Air Traffic Control tries to hail the Air India flight, but gets no response.
