My first job was scrubbing whitefish chowder pans.

I shut my eyes, I can still feel and smell what it felt like to drag the metal sponge

with the caked soup stuck to the bottom.

When I quit, the restaurant manager wasn't surprised.

Took me all of five shifts and two weeks for me to realize that that job just wasn't for me.

At the age of 14, I officially knew what it felt like to be unemployed.

But unemployment at 14 is somewhat different than unemployment in your 20s.

Less stress, less sympathy, and fewer bills to pay.

You know, among other things.

In fact, I didn't even bother applying for another job until two summers later.

Needless to say, I was enjoying what some people these days call fun employment.

But all throughout my life, one of my biggest fears has always been just that,

being unemployed.

The thought of abruptly losing my revenue stream is, and has always been, one of my biggest fears.

At my age, it feels like everything hinges around my job.

The money I make, or don't make, contributes directly to pretty much everything you encounter in life.

The apartment you live in, what your savings account looks like,

how soon you can or cannot buy an engagement ring.

Without the proper career in place, it often feels like you're constantly just up against it.

The inadequacy seats in.
