why do you tell listeners a little bit about your background before we get started?

I'm a financial planner now for 24 years.

But Kirk, if you asked me, you know, if I was going to grow up to be a financial planner, I would have said no. That was not what I was thinking I was going to be doing. I thought I would be doing one of two things. My name is Porter. And I was always really interested in journalism. I was always putting a fake mic in people's face asking them questions. So I became Porter, the reporter in university, which was super funny. I always had an interest in people and problems. And so I was really fascinated with the area of

psychology and human relations and how people relate to one another.

So I had actually, when I was in university, got a psychology and communications degree because I just

really wasn't sure which one I was going to do.

Crazy thing about that is I settled on, even though I got a degree in both, I settled on psychology.

But as I started to do like

practicums with people when I was in my last year of university and started to hear people

talk about their problems and a lot of what I learned back then had to do with unconditional

positive regard and listening. And I just felt like as I went to all the different meetings I had

with people who were going through their challenges, I kept hearing the same stories over and over
