Summary

Former FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong examines George Trepal, The Mensa Murderer. George attempted to kill 6 people - his next door neighbors - but only one of the victims died. George, a former chemist, used a highly toxic and rare poison, and believed with his genious IQ that he could outsmart the police. Candice dives into what the use of this particularly brutal poison tells us about this brilliant chemist, and why his faith in his own intelligence might have led to his eventual capture and arrest.

Pery Allen Car, or PI, as friends and family called him, a 44-year-old mine worker living in Altura's Florida arrived home on a hot and muggy day in June of 1988.

0:41.0

He checked the mailbox and found a note addressed to him. When he opened the envelope, he found a yellow post-it note with a typed message on it.

0:51.0

It read, you and all your so-called family have two weeks to move out or you will all die. This is no joke.

1:17.0

PI took their advice and forgot about the note. He had recently married Peggy Car, a 41-year-old waitress and they had combined their two households.

1:29.0

The two sets of children were not getting along and, frankly, his marriage after only a couple of months was in trouble. So he had plenty going on that distracted him.

He didn't think of the note again until a few months later. After his wife Peggy, his son Travis and his step-son Dwayne fell ill with the mysterious melody that was slowly and painfully killing them.

1:56.0

When it was discovered that the cause was a rare poison, it was too late to save Peggy. Travis was partially paralyzed for life and Dwayne would never be the same.

2:09.0

That yellow post-it note was no longer a joke. It was now one of the main clues that helped solve the mystery of who poisoned the cars.

I've spent five decades studying people's minds through my work as an FBI profiler and psychiatric nurse. I've interviewed lots of murderers including serial killers and the question of why they did it is what I get asked time and time again.

3:51.0

It's difficult to get a satisfying answer without diving deep into their mindsets. So that's what we're doing and I will give you my best analysis in this series of what made them do what they did.
