Summary

Looking for a pep in your step? You’re in luck! Today's guest on RunPod is Geoff Wightman – a 2.13.17 marathon runner, commentator, and coach to his son Jake Wightman (who is the second fastest Briton EVER at 1500m)! Geoff has been running since he was in Cubs, it’s how he met his wife, what all his family does, and in his words is “the best, simplest, nicest and healthiest activity you can do”. So should you carry water when you’re running? When should you have some rest? What’s the optimum amount of sleep you need before a race? And are Energy Gels actually a good idea? These are the kind of questions we’re asking so you’re prepared for any Race Day or run you’re going on. As Geoff says, “98% of starters do make it to the finish” – so ignore your doubts, get out there, and just concentrate on having good form! You can do it!

training mode for an autumn race, but also he's a bit of a speedster himself.

His marathon Peebbock, they'll correct me if I'm wrong, 2.13, and considering the European championships in Munich's just got gold for 210, I'd say that that's a pretty impressive time.

Jeff Whiteman. Hello there.

1:02.3

Hello. Thanks for having me. No, thank you. Is that right? 213. Yeah, 213. That's probably before you were born, Jenny. That was 1991, Berlin. I ran a couple of championship marathons. In fact,

1:07.3

I ran the European Championship Marathon the previous year. I was sixth in that and got engaged that night. So I remember it well.

1:13.6

As part of the celebration?

1:14.6

Yeah, just to a random woman.

1:17.6

I mean, it's pretty good. How fast could you do a marathon now?

1:21.6

Now, now. Oh, I don't know. I mean, I still cover 100 miles a month, and I still write it all down,

1:28.9

but a proportion of that is walking these days.

1:31.1

So I train with Chris Fennell, who's been one of your guests.

1:34.4

He's the ever-present, the London Marathon who's run all 42 of them.

1:39.2

And I do well to hang on to him at about eight-minute mile pace.

1:42.5

He's quite gentle with me, but I can do, I can probably still do five miles at eight minute pace, which isn't very good, but I'm

quite old. They do say though, don't you? Get someone who is a little bit faster to be your
