Morah, and the Canaanites were then in the land, as they would be until long after Joshua.

That's at least some of them.

But so the idea here is when God brings him there and says,

okay, this is the place, right?

This is a place that's already populated.

It's not like, oh, look, here's this big empty piece of land, right, for you to settle.

We went to the outskirts of everything, right?

There's already people there.

There's already a city there, Shechem.

Right?

There's already this oak there that is famous enough that you can refer to it as a landmark.

Right. So this is a settled place with history that God... there that is famous enough that you can refer to it as a landmark. Right?

So this is a settled place with history that God brings him to.

Verse 7,

then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,

To your seed I will give this land.

And there, Abraham built an altar to the Lord who appeared to him.

So again, this is Yahweh appears to him.
