Summary

Happy Pride Month! This week, Imara celebrates the process of gender exploration beyond rigid binaries and limitations. First, she’s joined by Eli Lawliet, also known as “The Gender Doula,” to talk about how he guides his clients through questioning and transitioning. He discusses the lessons he’s learned about gender presentation from his pet snakes and why he thinks identity labels can hinder exploration. Next, Frankie de la Cretaz returns to the show to chat about being a transmasc mom, experimenting with induced lactation, and navigating the world without the privileges of white womanhood.

Hey fam, it's me, Amara. Welcome to the Translash podcast, a show where we tell trans

0:14.6

stories to save trans lives. Well, of course, this is the month of all months. It's Pride Month

0:20.6

for us and our community.

0:23.3

And it's a month where we center pride and being ourselves and celebrating our gender journeys.

0:30.9

But it's really important for us to remember that whoever we are and how we define ourselves and however we did get here, it has been

0:40.5

just that, a journey full of uncertainty, full of exploration. And in our best selves, gender is

0:48.6

something that we continue to probe and understand and unpack because it can change throughout our lives, our understanding

0:56.5

of it, and our relationship to it.

0:58.9

That's why I wanted to speak with two people who embody an understanding that gender isn't

1:04.3

limited by binaries or boundaries.

1:07.1

First, I'll talk with gender dula and researcher, Eli Lolliet, about what it looks like to support people throughout their transition and beyond.

1:16.2

Folks will come to me and they'll be like, I just keep asking myself, am I trans? Am I non-binary? I just don't know.

1:22.3

And it's like, well, if you're asking yourself, am I trans or am I any label, right?

1:28.1

What you're inevitably doing is bringing up all the different associations that you have with that label.

1:34.9

Next, I'm joined by a freelance writer and author, Frankie De La Creda, who shares their experience

1:40.5

in exploring their own gender identity.

1:43.9

My gender is yes and.

1:46.0

It's this and that.

1:47.4

It is more on top of more, on top of more.

1:50.2

And that has been really liberating for me.

1:53.6

But before we get to these two wonderful boundary list conversations,

1:58.8

let's start out as always with some trans joy. Makeup and body modification can be joyful and creative ways to explore beyond the borders of normative gender expression.
