Today, we launch into a two-part series on Paul and Gender, looking in particular at First

Corinthians 11, which is a passage that deals with male headship, depending on how you

translate Keffalae, the Greek word that's often translated head. And it also deals with head

coverings, female head coverings in particular. So there are a couple of reasons why we've chosen

to look at this passage. First of all, it's an interesting theological passage, and it links

theology and gender in a way that a few other texts do. But it does so in a complicated way.

And this is one of the reasons why it makes why it's troublesome and contentious.

And so I'll read to you from 1st Corinthians 113,

but I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man

and the husband is the head of his wife,

and God is the head of Christ.

So this poses a major challenge, and one that the church fathers keenly recognized,

namely that whatever the precise relationship between these pairs that Paul links, the

link between them must be indirect, Because if you make the link between them

direct, then you run into major theological problems. So I'll explain what I mean. So Paul says,

there's some connection between Christ the head of man, man the head of woman, and God the head of Christ.
