| 0:00.0 | Welcome back, everybody, with the Football Guys Daily Update. |
| 0:02.7 | You give us 10 minutes. |
| 0:02.7 | We'll give you everything you need to know to make you the most informed fantasy football player in your elite. I'm Bob Harris, and week one is upon us. The fun begins in Philadelphia on Thursday night with the Micah Parsons-Las Dallas Cowboys taking on the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles. I encourage you to go back and listen to last Friday's episode of the Daily Update for more on Micah Parsons being traded to the Green Bay Packers. |
| 0:20.9 | In the meantime, I want to touch |
| 0:25.5 | base on, in some cases, review some issues we'll want to have on our radars as teams |
| 0:29.2 | begin hitting the field for practice for their week one contests. We'll get the ball rolling in |
| 0:34.2 | Miami where the Dolphins don't expect to have Jaylen Wright, who underwent a recent procedure for their season opener and likely beyond. |
| 0:40.9 | But they are optimistic about Devon A. Chan. |
| 0:44.0 | Should we share in that optimism? |
| 0:46.1 | A. Chan injured his calf in an August 13th practice, |
| 0:48.7 | and the Dolphins didn't provide a timeline for his return. |
| 0:51.8 | Head coach Mike McDaniels said it was more preventative in nature at the time, |
| 0:56.0 | which sounded encouraging, but do you remember that time when the San Francisco 49ers told |
| 1:01.1 | us their star running back Christian McCaffrey would be fine for week one? Of course you do. It was this |
| 1:06.5 | time last year. Look, I'm not saying this is a one-for-one comparison. McCaffrey had dealt with a calf and Achilles injury since the early days of training camp. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on August 6th that McCaffrey would be out for a couple weeks and that he wouldn't participate in the preseason. The expectation, though, was that the star running back would be able to get back in time for the team's regular season opener or a Monday night tilt with the New York Jets. Despite working on a limited basis in practice all that week, McCaffrey told reporters the Friday before kickoff that he had no doubt he would play. He even said he was hopeful he would get his usual heavy workload despite not working all summer. Instead, McCaffrey was ruled out 90 minutes before kickoff. Two weeks later, he was placed on injured reserve. |
| 3:24.3 | Now, given all that, as I wrote in this week's fantasy notebook, and you can hit the site, Footballguise.com, to read for more on that history there, it's not only fair to question what the dolphins are telling us here, it's necessary. While there's absolutely more to the A-chan story than dolphins are telling us, I'm not saying this is some nefarious effort to sink the fantasy fortunes of those invested in the second year back. It's not that level of paranoia, but it's more that I want to use the McCaffrey story to remind all of us just how tenuous situations can be. First of all, as the Niners of McCaffrey came to learn, calf injuries are tricky. Adding to that, as football guy Cecil Lammy reminded us all last week, A-chan is a speedback, so a calf injury might have an even greater impact on his game. Nonetheless, Adolphus continued to express confidence in his status and availability, and the upside is there, so we'll want to play him if he's available. We'll all be watching this closely in coming days to make sure A. Chan gets in some practice time. If he's a surprise and active, Ollie Gordon the second is the only other healthy tailbacks on the roster, although the team signed Jeff Wilson Jr. and Jamichael Hasty did the practice squad last week. If you're looking to make proactive roster moves heading into this week, Gordon would be the top of my list of potential ads. A couple other players we've been watching, Giants wide receiver Malik Neighbors doesn't think the back injury that caused him to miss the final two preseason games will be a problem going forward. ESPN's Jordan Renan reported that neighbors was running fine during the portion of this past Wednesday's practice open to the media. So we'll watch him. And also Viking superstar Justin Jefferson, we returned from a hamstring issue two weeks ago. And Philadelphia's AJ Brown dealt with a tight hammy of his own in recent weeks also seemed to be on track to start and play as usual week one. Also in Minnesota, when Adam Thielen was acquired by the Vikings just a few days ago, the plan was to work on his contract to make it more team friendly. That was done on Saturday. Thielen wanted to return to Minnesota, so much he reduced his salary by $2 million. Another $4 million in incentives were also removed from the deal. Thelan will be the team's number two receiver while Jordan Addison is suspended, and that's a three-game suspension. I talked to Matthew Collar of Purple Insider this past week. he thinksielen will have some value for fantasy investors over the course of the season is at least a wide receiver three level play. So, see about that. Meanwhile, Thelan's departure opens up some targets in Carolina. Sadly, Jalen Coker won't get any of them, at least early in the season. The Panthers placed Coker on short-term Iard due to a quadriceps injury. He'll miss at least the first four weeks of the regular season, and reports out of Carolina on Sunday suggested six weeks as possible. Cobra was poised to start in the slot after Thieneland was dealt to Minnesota. That spot will now go to Hunter Remphro and we'll be curious to see if the former raider can provide some deep flex value in PPR formats. In light of all this, it's worth noting that head coach Dave |
| 3:57.5 | Canales said last week the tight-end Jatian Sanders is ruling improved as a pass catcher. Entering a second season, Sanders has the athletic profile to be a receiving weapon for the Panthers. From a fantasy perspective, though, Sanders is no more than a tight-in three worth keeping an eye on if he's on your waiver wire in deeper leagues. And that's the key here. As intrigued as I was by Bryce Young's strong finish last season, other than rookie Tedroo and McMillan, who's likely to wind up in week one starting lineups, most managers will take their time in rolling out players like Sanders, Xavier Leggett, andfro, and, well, they should. |
| 4:47.4 | In San Francisco, the 49ers hope to have wide receiver Juan Jennings on the field for week one, but he's missed almost all of camp, and it seems like a reach to believe he'll be on the field against the Seahawks this weekend. If Jenny's camp go, the 49ers will be severely depleted at the position to start the season. Brandon Ayook is on the physically unable to perform list. The Marcus Robinson has suspended the first three games, |
