Let's be clear about something.

You are not responsible for the things that happened to you.

I'm talking about the events in life, especially talking about the traumatic ones,

that occurred that you had no conscious role in bringing about, the things that you did not opt into.

Those weren't your fault, Will Hunting. Those were not

your fault. Maybe they were the fault of other people in your life. Maybe they were catastrophic

events. Maybe they were horrible occurrences that kind of fell out of the sky. Acts of God or

acts of someone or the universe or nothing.

What happens after those events is that you are then given two things.

One, the psychic weight of those events, those events for which you are not responsible.

And two, you are given options.

You were given agency, perhaps limited,

perhaps encumbered, but some agency as to what to do next. Maybe you'll make all the right,

enlightened, wise decisions, run the board with a series of victories, but you almost definitely won't.

But you will learn. You'll maneuver. You'll gain wisdom. You'll chart a course. You'll have to.

And that is the case if you are a plumber in Cleveland, a retail clerk in Tokyo,

or a guy from Shepherds Bush, London, who goes on to be the lead singer in a huge

globally popular rock band.
