Out onto the old Roman road, across the crude stone walls

that keep the sheep in pasture, over the crest, to the ancient chapel, and back.

On the way you pass villagers hauling great bales and rough sacks.

You pass the merchants leaning in their doorways,

hands resting on their belt pouches.

You see the shepherd boys who wave to you each morning,

and women in the fields who straighten their backs from toil
