Summary

Chris and Jim start the hour by discussing a number of trade possibilities and draft needs on the horizon for the Patriots with the NFL Draft approaching later this month. The guys also give their thoughts on some comments this week from Doc Rivers and whether the city's relationship with Ray Allen can be mended with KG's jersey retirement on the horizon.

So, Ben Volan, Boston Globe, the colleague of Chris Casper, who sits to my left, more than six feet away, safety first here inside the Town Fair tire studio, right, Chris? He tried to make a case for the Patriots moving up to the draft later this month, selecting Alabama quarterback to a Tago Vailoa, who, correct me if I'm wrong, right? Like, would have been the number one pick overall if it wasn't for that massive hip injury, I would think.

Like, it was trending.

I mean, you know, everyone knows it's burrow now, but I think it would have been a real competition. No question. I'm intrigued by him. If he can stay healthy, I think it's a big if. I think he could be decent in the NFL. but after thinking about it, like, and looking at this, and it's intriguing, but I'm a no, like, I'm a hard no.

1:12.1

And I know that Belichick's not going to do it either.

1:13.9

And I think there's a couple of reasons why. One, it'd be too costly. And Ben, rightfully, points out the somewhat recent comparison when the Eagles traded with the Cleveland Browns to move up, take Carson Wentz. It was two firsts, a second round, or a third, and a fourth. And that's for a guy who turned out, I think, to be good, good, not great, and also made out of glass. Like, I'm no Carson Wentz fan. Like, he flashes at times, but I just don't know if he's going to have a long career in the NFL because it seemingly is always something with Carson Wentz when it comes injury. But this team has too many holes, the Patriots, especially in 2020. You need help on both lines. You need a linebacker help desperately. Yeah, that's a good point. You need some semblance of a serviceable tight end. I think you could use another safety. You need a kicker. And I know you get a lot of picks, but I think this is a year they've got to use all those picks. I just think the cost would be too high for one. And the other thing is, and I think a lot of people are trying to stick their head in the sand about how they feel about Jared Stidham. And I was one of these people. Bill has told us, like, they know who their quarterback is. It's Stidham. Since last summer, he has had his mouthpiece media cartel singing this kid's praises. Jared Stidham's, the next quarterback of the Patriots. We've never seen anyone this young look this good at quarterback at practice, even better than Jimmy Garoppolo. And at the time, it was like, all right, we know what you're doing here. You're pumping the tires of Stidham. But he's the guy. They've already given him the cute nickname. Bill's given him the cute nickname. Stid the kid. Stid the kid. The respected. The veterans, Slater, McCordy, Gilmore. They've all been his personal PR firm in recent weeks, and especially the two that have been brought back on new deals in McCordy and Stidham. Great attitude, the great work ethic.

2:51.2

Like, all right, we get it.

2:52.2

But they're screaming in our faces.

2:53.6

We're going with Stidham. We're going with Stidham. We're going with Stidham. It's glaringly obvious. So, you know, I think that's their reason alone. Like, they're not going to do it. But just in terms of the cost, it would be too much, right?

3:06.3

Like, they can't do this.

3:08.0

Yeah, I mean, it would be too much, right? Like, they can't do this.

3:10.8

Yeah, I mean, it would be a huge cost for them.

3:13.3

Look, I think Tua is worth it.

3:14.5

I'm in on Tua.

3:15.8

I like the idea.

3:18.2

I just don't think they can execute it.

3:21.7

I just find it hard to believe that other teams would allow it.

3:24.4

That they wouldn't, I mean, Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia obviously have connections to Bill Belichick from their time here with the Patriots,

3:32.0

but unless this is some sort of like debt of gratitude or debt they owe to the dawn, why would they do this?

3:38.2

I mean, you can just spark a bidding war for this pick and get
