Summary

What are the latest developments in Russia with the Putin regime? How have recent protests surrounding the arrest of opposition leader Alexei Navalny affected it? What is the nature of Putin’s power and why have his tactics so often been effective? To discuss, Bill Kristol is joined again by former world chess champion and human rights activist Garry Kasparov. According to Kasparov, the recent protests have demonstrated deep dissatisfaction in Russia with the Putin regime and the depth of its corruption. However, Kasparov notes that Putin has proven stubbornly effective at maintaining power and may yet weather this and other challenges he faces. In response to Putin’s authoritarianism, Kasparov calls for America and the leaders of the West to develop a coherent strategy for countering Putin’s aggression and for defending the principles of liberty, democracy, and free markets that have been the source of our strength.

people think very interesting conversations about topics ranging from his own history as

0:29.9

a chess champion and his leading a democracy movement in Russia, his leaving Russia, unfortunately,

0:35.8

having to leave Russia, and then his work on artificial intelligence as well. And Gary

Dow runs two pro-democracy, pro-human rights organizations, the Renew Democracy Initiative

0:48.0

and the Human Rights Foundation, spends most of his time fighting for democracy not just

0:52.1

in Russia, but around the world and against the authoritarian wave. So, Gary, thanks for

joining me again. Oh, thanks for inviting me.

So let's talk about Russia, and then we're broadly about authoritarianism, and how to

fight the authoritarian wave in pro-democracy, but Russia, you wrote a book, Winter is coming

1:10.6

in 2015, I think, and we've discussed that. And so, I mean, here we are six years later,

1:19.3

it's not better, right?

1:21.3

No, it's not better, but as expected. So, we probably should spend a bit of time describing

1:31.1

what better means for Russian terms, you know, Putin's six-year-older, so his biological

1:38.0

time is ticking, hopefully. But we know that dictators are, you know, they could stay just

1:46.1

for a long time, so they, unfortunately, they're aging well. And the same time, I think it

1:54.4

just, it's the, any illusions people had about Putin's regime, they've gone. So, in 2015,

2:00.0

when the book was released in 2016, I had a huge problem, and actually, we discussed it

2:06.1

in our conversation, to communicate the story about the true nature of Putin's regime.

2:13.3

Yeah, just to say Putin was a dictator, you know, could spark an outburst of your counterpart,

2:21.4

say, no, no, no, no, no, no, that's, yeah, it's just a kind of managed democracy. Yes, it's
