Ready? You have to learn how to hear it. You know it can be very quiet and and slow and beautiful and then it can get like totally hectic and frantic and but it doesn't build to the climax and then the release and then the resolution the way the music, the Western music we're used

to hearing does.

You have to just accept that it's not going to behave the way you might think that music

behaves.

That's Anne Miller and these are the sounds of Gam Gamelan Sula Kala, a group of 15 people in Central

Vermont who come together at the dead end of a dirt road in the basement of the Goddard College

Library to play Indonesian music on an ornate court

gamelon made for Goddard on the island of Java.

Gongs, bronze and wooden slatted instruments, teak instruments sculpted into serpents, stuffed into a concrete storage room underneath the Goddard Library.

There's no harmony in Gamelon. Instead, each sound is part of an intricate layering of patterns.

A gamelon is one instrument comprised of 30 instruments. No one instrument or musician stands alone.

Which is funny because the people in Gamelon are people who very much stand alone.

The youngest member is 17, others are in their early 70s. Writers and former strawberry farmers

and scientists and renaissance music lovers, and at least one woman who's lived alone deep in the

woods off the grid for 30 years. I guess what I'd say
