When I was younger, I watched the less than spectacular motion picture Ghost Writer starring Nicholas Cage.

Do you remember this one? It was an early comic book to movie adaptation. And the movie didn't sit right with me at all just because of the general crappificity of it.

But also because of the premise didn't work,

didn't feel right. Ghost Rider is a motorcycle riding dude with a whip, like a flaming whip thing,

and he has a flaming skull for a head. I mean, you know, I could see how that would appeal to the sturge's crowd. I mean, I get that there's some culture there or whatever. But what I don't

like about it is that he's under some kind of curse from the devil or something. And

that's the very thing that makes him special is that, you know, because he's got this curse,

he's destined to go and ride the lonesome highways

and some sort of perdition or purgatory and dishing out justice. I don't know. I didn't get it. I'm sure

there are a couple of Ghost Rider fans out there right now who are really mad and how much I just

screwed up the whole Ghost Writer lore. But look, the thing that

didn't work for me as a young man when I watched that was I just don't like rooting for a hero

whose main feature is that he's cursed. It seems backwards. It doesn't fit with notions of

heroism, storytelling, and all of that. And likewise, in Galatians 313, you got a verse that happens in two parts.

And the first half of it, if you like Jesus or the Bible or redemption, the first half of it, you're like, yay, that's great.

I love the Bible.

God's, super.

But the second half of it kind of feels icky because it says Jesus is cursed or even worse maybe became a curse.

Here's how it goes.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law.

Yay.

We want that by becoming a curse for us.
