Hello and welcome to Ways to Change the World. I'm Christian Gary Murphy and this is the

0:05.6

podcast in which we talked to extraordinary people about big ideas and the events and

0:10.2

their lives that have helped shape them. My guest this week is an award-winning science

0:15.2

writer and journalist who certainly has a big idea. Her latest book is called No Mad Century

0:21.7

and Guy Avins' proposition is that the world is going to have to see mass migration

0:28.7

on a scale the likes of which we have never seen before in order to adapt to the climate

0:36.2

emergency. Guy thank you for joining us. No Mad Century sounds like this is inevitable.

Do you think the idea of mass migration is now unstoppable? Migration is already happening

0:54.0

because of the climate change that we've already made. I mean if you look at just this year

1:00.2

we've experienced extreme weather conditions across the planet. So huge amounts of drought

1:07.2

across Europe, across China. It's so severe that hydropower stations can't function in

1:12.9

China which is affecting economic production, food production and that of course affects

1:18.0

1:24.0

burning, wildfires out of control, people have sadly lost their lives. The ONS reckons

1:29.5

that the heat wave we had just for one week in July raised the death toll by a fifth over

1:36.8

the year-on-year average for that time of year. I mean the current argument around climate

1:42.8

change and reducing carbon emissions is that this is avoidable, that drastic changes to

1:51.0

the way we live are yet preventable. What I'm saying in No Mad Century is raise your

1:57.7

head above the day-to-day and have a look at what we are facing. Just really look head

2:05.1

on what we're facing and then be pragmatic because we do have choices. Of course we do.

2:11.7

We can avoid extreme, more extreme temperature rise but not just through emissions reductions

2:18.3

anymore. We're already raising that. We had the COP26 last year where all the broadcasters
