Someone whose work redefined for me what a memoir could be.

Gabrielle Hamilton is the James Beard award-winning chef behind Prune, one of my all-time

favorite restaurants in New York City, and she's also the author of Blood, Bones, and Butter.

She has a new book out this week called Next of Kin, which I devoured when I got my hands on it

last week. This one isn't about food, at least not specifically.

It's about family, which in Gabrielle's life has been far more complicated than any recipe that she's ever worked on.

She grew up in a feral and charismatic household, which if you've read Blood, Bones, and Butter,

you're probably pretty familiar with. But over the years, that wild and magnetic family splintered.

Gabrielle chose to rewrite a lot of what she'd put on the page in Blood, Bones, and Butter.

Next to Kin is a forensic investigation into the myths that we build about our families.
