Truth without emotion results in a dead orthodoxy,

in a church full of fighters,

even fighters for love, fighters for truth, fighters for this.

Emotion without truth produces empty frenzy and cultivates flaky people who reject the discipline of rigorous thought. True discipline comes from deeply emotional

people who love deep and true doctrine.

Many of us have felt this tension at some point.

On the one hand, we don't want our worship to be cold and lifeless.

But on the other hand, we don't want it to drift into emotional flimsyness either.

If people are spiritually asleep, you have to shock them, you have to startle them.

Sometimes you have to scandalize them in order to get them to hear what you have to say.

Jesus was especially good at this, and so when he wanted to teach us something about worship,

he used a whore to do it. Go call your husband. I don't have a husband.
