US Champion Josh Thompson makes his first-ever appearance on The Running Effect Podcast today!
Josh holds PRs of 3:34.77 in the 1500m and 3:52.49 in the Mile.
Josh has a remarkable story from going from JUCO to making World Championship teams for the US, as we discuss in this conversation.
Josh is a two-time World Championship 1500m finalist and has won US titles before.
As an Oklahoma State senior in 2017, he finished 6th in the NCAA Indoor Mile and 4th outdoors in the 1500.
In February 2016, Josh became the first Nevada native to run a Mile in under 4 minutes, clocking 3:58.33 indoors at the University of Washington's Husky Classic.
At Moapa Valley High School, he lead the cross country team to two Nevada state titles as well as winning two 3200m state titles.
In today's conversation, Josh takes me through his career, what it takes to go from "good to great," how he works on tactics, being a dad and how he balances fatherhood with his passion for running, his ambitions for the future, and so much more.
This conversation is a masterclass in distance running. You won't want to miss the opportunity to learn and grow from Josh.

0:00.0 | My dad would be like, okay, well, whoever wins this competition has to run these suicides or these laps or ladders, you know? |
0:07.0 | And, you know, us kids are like, wait, why are you punishing us with running and the losers, you know, don't have to do anything. |
0:13.0 | My dad would explain to us, you know, like, hey, like the winners are the ones who get to play. |
0:17.0 | The winners are the ones who are in shape and get to play. |
0:25.9 | The losers, you know, sit the bench and watch. And so that kind of changed my whole, like, |
0:32.0 | mentality of like, oh, wow, like the winners are the ones who train and get better, whereas, like, |
0:36.3 | the losers, you know, have to, like, sit and watch, you know, from the sidelines. And I never wanted to sit and watch from the |
0:37.6 | sidelines. I wanted to be playing. J.T., Mr. Josh Thompson, welcome to the Running Effect |
0:43.6 | podcast. How are you doing this afternoon? Good, good. Thanks for having me. I normally don't do |
0:48.5 | this. And we've known each other for approximately five minutes. So you might not know this about me, |
0:54.1 | but my podcasts are very chill, very conversational. |
0:56.7 | I haven't done this with other episodes, but about 20 minutes ago when I was thinking about |
1:00.6 | our conversation today and some of the things that I think you can provide to my audience, |
1:05.4 | one of those things is just a long, sustainable, consistent, successful career. |
1:10.7 | And with that, I was like, I'd be a fool not to extract some wisdom from the man himself. |
1:15.2 | A lot of times with guests, I'll go into story and whatnot from the very get-go. |
1:18.5 | But for you, just like off the top of your head, you know, asking you some things that I think would be super beneficial to the listener. |
1:25.5 | You know, you've trained at a bunch of high levels within the |
1:29.2 | sport. You've been around some of the best people in the sport. I'm curious as you sit here and |
1:33.5 | reflect with me, what would you say is the difference between those who are good in the sport of |
1:38.5 | running and those who are great in the sport of running? And what can people do to go from good |
1:42.3 | to great in the sport of running? Oh, man, I love that |
