became independent. Independent or not, the U.S. reserved the right to intervene at any time.

The U.S. helped shape Cuba's government and economy, especially its sugar industry.

American businesses owned large portions of Cuban land and infrastructure, and then later on,

oil companies would come down into Cuba as well. By the 1950s, Cuba was ruled by dictator Fluencio

Batista. He had been leading the country from behind the scenes for a while.
