We're going to start today with some reporting on how the NFL pledged on Wednesday to halt

the use of something called race-norming.

Race-norming is a term used to describe the assumption that black players started out

with a lower cognitive function than white and other non-black players.

While that's pretty fucked up on its own, the reason it's particularly relevant is because

it has long impacted the settlement of brain injury claims, for players who suffer

from the effects of head trauma from the sport.

The practice of race-norming has made it harder for black retirees to show a cognitive

deficit, and as a result qualify for an award from the league.

Wednesday's announcement comes after a pair of black players filed a civil rights lawsuit

over the practice.

And according to the NFL, they have formed a panel of neuropsychologists recently to propose

a new testing regime to get rid of race-norming, and the panel includes two female and three

black doctors, and they say that whatever new norms are determined for cognitive testing

will be applied both prospectively and retrospectively.
