Parkinson's disease is a disease of dopamine deficiency in the brain.

0:16.6

You can't just have people take dopamine because it can't pass through the blood-brain barrier,

0:22.6

but you can give people a dopamine precursor called L-dopa,

0:26.6

or L-dopa, which can get up into the brain and be turned into dopamine.

0:31.6

However, with prolonged treatment, patients start to show a reduced response to levitopa.

0:36.6

After five years of levitopa treatment, the benefits start wearing off before the next

0:42.3

dose or don't completely contain symptoms in a substantial proportion of patients and

0:47.3

represents a major source of disability and significantly impairs quality of life.

Therefore, maximizing the therapeutic efficiency of

0:55.8

levitopa is an important goal, and that's where protein-restricted diets come in.

1:03.0

Wait, what does protein have to do with Parkinson's? Certain amino acids in proteins have been

1:09.6

proven to impair the therapeutic effect of

1:12.1

Leavidopa by reducing its absorption and influx into the brain, because they use the same

1:17.5

transporter so can crowd each other out.

1:20.1

Here's a before-and-after PET scan, showing Leavidopa activity in the brain before and after

protein loading.

1:32.3

That's why protein-restricted diets can improve the efficacy of levidopa. There are three ways to do that.

1:34.3

In overall, low-protein diet, a so-called protein redistribution diet,

1:40.3

or a combination of the two.

1:42.3

As a dietary strategy, a low-protein diet, it's nice because it's not only effective,

1:48.2

but also simple to understand and follow.

1:50.5

And by low protein, we're just talking about sticking to the recommended amount of protein,
