The Core 4. The four headlines you need to know. Not the best news to hear, but it's news. The endangered species list grew by 2000 this year.

And to be clear, that's 2,000 species added to the list. The list is actually over 44,000 species long.

They're all threatened with extinction.

This year alone, scientists declared 21 species officially extinct, and they were all in the U.S.

They were birds, mussels, fish, and one mammal.

Why is all this happening?

You should know the answer by now, but climate change, exploitation, and invasive species are all cited as reasons.

The UN said today's rate of extinction is at least tens to hundreds of times higher than extinctions over the last 10 million years.

The plus side of creating the endangered species list is that all of those species will get

special attention. It's what saved the bald eagle, humpback whale, alligator, whooping crane,

and more. To quote a biologist, until it's too late, it's not too late. So you can help endangered

species in your area by putting pressure on local governments to protect them.
