Summary

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged" (Matthew 7:1). What did Jesus really mean by that? Does this mean Christians should never call out sin or hold others accountable?

Fr. Mike Schmitz breaks down this often-misunderstood teaching of Jesus. He explains that while we’re called not to condemn others' hearts or souls, we are called to discern right from wrong. The key? Start with humility. Fr. Mike urges us to examine ourselves first, approach others with curiosity instead of condemnation, and always lead with compassion.

do not judge, does he mean that we can't actually say, okay, that behavior is wrong

0:37.7

or that behavior is right?

0:38.9

And the answer is no.

0:40.7

That's not what Jesus means.

Not only does he say, move the wooden beam from your own eye so that you can help move the splinter

from your brother's eye.

0:47.7

That means you have to notice there's a splinter in your brother's eye, and you want to

help him.

0:51.7

So we have that. But in the very same chapter, in the very same teaching,

0:55.9

Jesus goes on to say, do not give it as holy to dogs. Do not throw pearls before swine? Well,

1:01.3

you have to judge, or at least another word is, you have to assess, am I throwing pearls before

1:09.3

swine, or am I throwing or giving pearls to someone who actually will receive it?

1:14.3

So there's a little bit of assessment going on.

1:16.3

In the same chapter, chapter seven, he goes on to say, beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but underneath are ravenous wolves.
