In 1988, the idea that there would be an end to the troubles was pretty unthinkable from

us people living in Northern Ireland.

That year, a special forces unit of the British Army hunted down and killed three unarmed

members of the IRA and Gibraltar.

A funeral was held in Belfast a few days later, and the BBC was there to cover it.

The burial service was well underway at the Republican plot in Milton's cemetery when

suddenly there were five explosions among the crides standing near us to park terraces.

In moments, a gunman emerged firing and throwing grenades at his pursuers.

During the service, the loyalist attacked the crowd.

He killed three people and injured 60.

A few days later, they held a funeral procession for one of the people murdered in the cemetery

attack.

Two British troops in an unmarked car sped dangerously close to the crowd.
