In the world of female impersonation pageants, there is no title more coveted than being crowned

Miscontinental.

Founded in 1980, the Miss Continental pageant attracts contestants from all around the world,

and even some of the most beloved Roo girls first had

their eye on the crown before they went on to drag rates. But with so many other pageants

going on, what is it that makes contestants so willing to sacrifice everything and return

year after year in hopes of snatching the Miss Continental Crown.

The new documentary film The Queens looks at the allure of the decades-old Miss Continental

contest and what it takes to win the one crown that rules them all.

Today, the Queen's filmmaker Mark Saxonmeyer joins us to talk about how the documentary showcases the Continental Pagent System, with a behind-the-scenes look at the run-up to the competition and interviews with the legends who run this prestigious contest.

You've been working on that film for at least a decade now.

Yeah, almost a decade.

Nine years and counting, yes.

What made you want to pick this incredible drag pageant system, Miss Continental, over other drag pageant

systems, as the subject for this film. Yeah, have you guys been to Miss Continental? Yes, I have,

and it's legendary. So that pearly answers it. So the long version of it is, you know, when I moved to Chicago back in 94, one of the very

first clubs I went to was the baton when it was downtown in its original location before
