Summary

I've had requests in the past for a podcast about chasing coastal cutthroats, so this week my guest is author, "retired" guide, and all-around thoughtful angler Dylan Tomine [33:12]. He tells us where to find them, what kinds of tides and conditions are best, and what flies and techniques work well for these fish that are close to many cities in the Northwest.

In the Fly Box this week, we have these questions and more:
  • Advice on the best 6-weight to choose for all-around fly fishing.
  • I am having trouble deciding between a 9foot 5-weight and a 4-weight Superfine.  Please help me decide
  • When should I use micro-swivels in my trout setup?
  • Should I worry about getting bitten by a snapping turtle when wading a smallmouth river?
  • Why do I see people playing steelhead with their rod held horizontally, pointing at the fish. Aren't you supposed to keep a bend in your rod?
  • Can I use the Orvis Knot as a loop knot?
  • Can you review how we should handle fish to increase their chances of survival?
  • What can I do to renew the floating properties of a line that seems to be in good shape?

Hi, and welcome to the Orvis Fly Fishing podcast.

0:16.1

This is your host, Tom Rosenbauer.

0:18.3

And my guest today is Dylan Tomine. Dylan is a marketer and in the past was a

0:27.5

fishing guide and he's a great writer. And I consider him an expert on all things northwest fly fishing.

0:40.9

And the topic of our conversation today is sea run cutthroats,

0:46.9

which is a topic that I've had some requests for in the past.

0:51.2

And I have absolutely no experience in coastal cutthroats whatsoever and so I asked

0:58.0

Dylan if he would come on the podcast to talk about him and he modestly said that he's not an

1:04.3

expert at coastal cutthroats but he's done it and him being a modest guy I I know he knows a lot more than he says he does.

1:14.6

So anyway, if you've been interested in chasing coastal cutthroats, this is the podcast for you.

1:22.8

Also, a lot of the things that Dylan recommends in this podcast, I think apply to the sea run brown trout

1:29.6

fishing that I've done in the past. So if you're in Europe and you probably will never see a

1:35.9

coastal cutthroat, I think a lot of the things that Dylan talks about will help you in pursuing

1:41.6

your own sea run brown trout on the coast there.

1:46.3

Also, I just wanted to let you know that we're starting to release some new Tom's Tips

1:51.6

videos on the Orvis Learning Center and YouTube and shorter versions on Instagram.

1:58.8

We'll have a new video every week. These are videos that we shot over the

2:03.1

past 12 months, but have never been seen by the public. So we're starting to release a bunch of

2:09.7

those. And if you see the short version on Instagram and you want a longer, more detailed

2:16.1

version with a little more fishing in it,

2:19.8

then you can go on to YouTube or the Orvis Learning Center and see these.

2:24.0

So they'll come out every week, usually on Thursday or Friday,
