The first woman to ever be on the FBI's most wanted terrorists list has died at 78 years old.

Asada Shakur, also known as Joanne Chesmard, was a Black Liberation and Black Panther activist who was

given political asylum in Cuba in 1979, after escaping from a U.S. prison where she had been

serving life for killing a New Jersey police officer in 73.

State Trooper Werner Forster was killed and another officer wounded during a gunfight between them,

Shakur, and two others.

At the time, Shakur was also wanted for numerous other felonies, including bank robbery.

She was sentenced in 1977 only to escape two years later and eventually find freedom in Cuba.

Shakur always maintained that she was being pursued for crimes she didn't commit,

or which she deemed justified.
