The following day, the Cathatees marched the young lodger into Mrs. Makebelieve's room,

covered in bruises and plasters.

He had been approached on the street by a large man who had begun to beat him,

but he had given as good as he got, and they were pulled off each other by passers-by before it could get too bad.

He was immensely proud of himself, and Mary and her mother knew it must have been the work of the policeman.

Shortly after this, Mrs. Makebelieve received a remarkable letter.

It was from a solicitor's office, claiming that her brother, Patrick, had passed away two years ago and had left all his

worldly possessions to her, including various properties in New York, furniture, art, and all the

money in his bank, including any future interest to be accrued.

They went to the offices the next day to confirm receipt and prove their identities

and left with a £50 advance while the funds and deeds were arranged.

Mrs. Makebelief completed her week's notice at Mrs. O'Connor's house,

and Mary continued walking with her young friend in the evenings,

but this time spoke of all the things she would buy
