Summary

Your body is accumulating "zombie cells" right now that spew inflammation and accelerate aging as your immune system loses its ability to clear them out. Dr. Michael Greger reveals the three senolytic compounds hiding in strawberries, red onions, and red cabbage that can actually eliminate these cells and slow the biological clock.

Hi, my name is Lewis Howes and welcome to the Daily Motivation Show.

0:11.9

So what is the difference between, I guess, bad cells and zombie cells?

0:16.6

Oh, this is cellular senescence.

0:18.5

So this is one of the aging pathways that cover 11 aging pathways, kind of our 11 best opportunities for slowing the sands of time, ending each with kind of impractical takeaways.

0:31.0

This is the part one of the book.

0:32.6

It is kind of the nerdy section.

0:34.0

It goes really deep into kind of the interesting biology mechanisms.

0:38.6

But, you know, really do kind of interesting biology mechanisms, but, you know,

0:54.3

really do kind of like, okay, but here's the bottom line. You can skip all this. Sure, sure. You know, this is the foods to eat. This is the activity to do, blah, blah, blah, blah. So yeah, and the silhoust in essence chapter, very fascinating. So our cells in our body only divide about a hundred times before they stall out.

0:56.0

The so-called hayflick limit.

0:54.3

We used to think cells just kind of, you know, only divide about 100 times before they stall out.

0:56.1

The so-called hayflick limit.

1:01.7

We used to think cells just kind of, you know, divided forever, but they only divide 50 times.

1:04.6

And this is good because that's a protection against cancer.

1:09.6

We want cells to naturally kind of put themselves out to pasture, being replaced by new cells from the stem cells.

1:10.4

Right. And, you know, cells can become damaged along the way. Okay. So the only, and so at the end of those about 50 doublings, what the cells do is they release these inflammatory mediators, which signals the immune system to come and kill them, basically come and wipe them out. This is basically their kind of little suicide way. Sure, sure, sure. They're like, okay, so they release these inflammatory compounds, signal the immune system, and then comes and clears out these so-called zombie cells that are no longer participating in the body actively spewing this, what's called senescence associated sapsed.

1:45.4

But, okay, the problem is, this works great when we're young.

1:50.2

Unfortunately, our immune system starts to decline with age.

1:53.2

And so what happens is our immune system's ability to clear out these cells

1:58.4

decline such that our body's tissues get littered with these

2:04.1

senescent cells spewing out inflammation. And one of the reasons why levels of inflammation

climb with AIDS. So you can do these kind of blood tests of systemic inflammation like
