What is up everyone? Welcome back to the epic gardening podcast. Today we are talking about

succulents and specifically how do you fertilize your succulents? So this is a question that a lot of people wonder because succulents are some of the easiest plants in the world to grow.

So usually I say just put them in the sun, water them once a week, and forget about them. But the question then becomes, well,

don't they need some kind of nutrition? Don't they need something in order to

keep on surviving? That is definitely true. So the question is, do we care for our succulents in the most basic way?

Because I know a lot of people that I talk to succulents are the first plant that they ever

grow. So it is definitely one that you want to succeed with.

It's definitely a good choice because it again is easy to grow. But there are some things you have to do

in order to care for your succulent, so let's get into that.

First we're going to talk about soil.

So if you're putting the pieces together, you might be imagining that succulents need a well draining soil mix.

And that is correct.

They tend to grow in locations where water is not available for a long period of time.

And a lot of the commercial potty mixes are just too moist.

They hold water too well.

If you don't buy a specific succulent mix,

what you can do is actually add some coarse purlite to your soil because that will increase the

drainage capacity. Now if you live in an area where it's cold in the winter you should

plant your succulents in pots so that you can bring them indoors during cold months.

Suculants are particularly prone to freezing damage.

The reason why is kind of interesting.

I mean they store water in their leaves, so if you have frost, that water will freeze very easily and destroy the succulents.
