Bueing beer at home comes not without its fair share of considerations.

Extract or all grain, 5 or 10 gallons, aluminum or stainless.

Indeed, there are many things a brewer can choose to concern themselves with,

one of which involves the open air that sits above beer while it's fermenting.

contributor Jake Hoolahan is with me to talk about the seemingly trivial yet often worried about impact of fermenter head space.

Yeah, it definitely does seem trivial, but it's probably one of those things that we've all considered at one point or another,

you know, just due to probably logistical, you know, aspects of the

homebrew, whether or not we have enough head space that we're going to need a

blow-off tube or not, but can that, can that fermentation head space, you know, actually cause differences in the

beer? That's something that we were interested in.

Absolutely, and unlike many of the variables that we have tested tested this was one that I really hadn't

thought that much about until I was well into my home brewing career you know I

started off I remember I wanted to brew like a like a two and a half gallon batch

just test something out and it wasn't

until the work was finished boiling and I'm getting ready to chill where I'm going,

wait a minute, what am I going to ferment this in?

You know, and I hit the forums, which for better or or for worse taught me that people really do concern themselves with the amount of head space that's that's above the beer during fermentation.

So not wanting to leave any stones unturned, we definitely put it to the test.

And we will be discussing the results from that experiment in a bit.
