We believe that layoffs are imminent. They are unfortunately a consequence of this government shutdown.

That's White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt today, referring to federal workers after the government shutdown at midnight.

She didn't say what percentage of the workforce would be impacted, but previous government shutdowns didn't lead to mass layoffs,

including during President Donald Trump's first term.

Senators are out of town through Friday,

which means the government will likely be shut down until then or possibly longer.

Today, the Senate failed to advance the House GOP's stopgap bill and Democrats' version.

Congress was deadlocked over extending enhanced Obamacure subsidies.

Independence is at stake in a new Supreme Court case.

The justices will decide whether President Trump can fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook.

She'll keep her job at least until the court holds oral arguments in January.

Trump removed Cook in late August, citing allegations of mortgage fraud as cause.

Cook has not been charged with a crime

and says the allegations against her are, quote, flimsy. If Trump ultimately succeeds, it'll be the
