Summary

What are the biggest takeaways from last night’s major new fundraising numbers? For starters, here are two: Democratic frontrunner President Joe Biden is in pretty good shape, and GOP frontrunner former president Donald Trump is spending an unprecedented amount on legal fees. Campaign reporter Zach Montellaro joins Playbook deputy editor Zack Stanton to walk through more key findings, and what these totals can tell us about the shape of things in the year ahead.

Hey, good morning. I'm Playbook Deputy Editor Zach Stanton. It is Thursday, February 1st,

0:10.6

and here's what's driving the day. Last night, the House passed a $78 billion tax package

0:16.5

that expands the child tax credit, a priority for Democrats, while restoring a trio of tax breaks

0:22.9

for businesses, a priority for many Republicans.

0:26.3

Now, if that sounds like an odd moment of bipartisanship, that's because it is.

0:31.9

The bill was hammered out between House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith, who's a Republican

0:36.4

from Missouri, and Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wy Smith, who's a Republican from Missouri,

0:41.6

and Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden, who's a Democrat from Oregon.

0:50.4

0:55.6

1:01.8

party's right flank. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces a major obstacle,

1:07.6

with key Republican senators indicating their strong opposition to the legislation.

1:13.0

Our own Ben Guggenheim, citing a senior Republican aide, reports that the Senate is unlikely

1:17.6

to move on the package until March. Now, it is, as I mentioned, February 1st in an election

1:24.2

year, and for true political obsessives, that means one thing. The FEC

1:29.7

filing deadline has passed, allowing us to pop the hood of every major congressional, Senate,

1:35.4

and presidential campaign in the country, and get a real sense of where things stand in the

1:40.1

dash for cash. Joining me to talk about what we're learning from those reports is campaign reporter Zach Montalaro.

1:46.8

Good morning, Zach.

1:48.2

Good morning, Zach.

1:50.9

I love the sound of that.

1:52.7

So let's start with the big takeaways.
