Summary

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Not Alexandra Pascalidou. The Greek-Swedish journalist did something that would scare many of us: after years of threats from neo-Nazis, she invited one of them for a cup of coffee. Alexandra gives us a masterclass in forgiveness — and stay tuned later in the week for a bonus episode featuring her full conversation with The Europeans. But first, actual wolves. After Belgium saw its first in a century, we're taking a look at how different countries across the continent are dealing with 20,000 of the proud predators — and our guest Max Rossberg of the European Wilderness Society argues we need a total rethink. Plus: the monster of Brussels, a monstrous week for Britain's Jeremy Corbyn, and some less monstrous news to cheer us up at the end. Hello, listeners. Just a quick warning that this week's episode contains a discussion of some pretty horrible death threats and harassment.

0:27.1

Coming to you live from Amsterdam and Paris, this is The Europeans.

0:29.2

Except it's not live at all.

0:29.9

Hello, Dominic.

0:31.1

Hi, Katie.

0:32.6

Yeah, that's true. I shouldn't lie.

0:35.0

It's not live. It's Sunday here.

0:36.6

A very nice chilly Sunday.

0:39.3

I've had an ice-themed weekend. No way, I'm so jealous. What have you done?

0:41.3

I went ice skating on the top of Montparnasse Tower, so skyscraper in the middle of Paris,

0:46.3

really hideous skyscraper. But I heard that they put an ice rink at the top, so we went up there,

0:51.3

only to find that it's not actually ice. It's kind of like

0:54.5

plastic ice, which I didn't know existed. Oh yeah, I've seen one of that. It always looks really

0:59.6

disappointing. It was disappointing. And most people were on rollerblades, so it wasn't really

1:05.1

ice skating at all. But it was still like really, it was a really beautiful blue day.

1:09.5

But it also sounds like it would be really cold at the top of a skyscraper.

1:13.6

It was. It was very windy. I thought I might fall off. But that was cool. And then the

1:18.1

amazing thing was that at the side of the ice rink in inverted commas, there was a little mini

1:22.4

curling rink. I don't, I don't think you could call it a rink, a curling strip where you could throw

1:28.1

curding stones and watch them slide.

1:30.2

And it was really exciting.

1:31.5

And I think that our guest from last week, Finnish Olympian Una Koucester will be very proud
