In this podcast, we're going to talk about the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. I want to explain a little bit about both of these and compare which one is better.
Fasting vs. Keto:
The keto diet:
When we're talking about keto, we're talking about low-carb. You could do keto with zero carbs, but most people do a small number of carbs (20-50g). Every time you eat, no matter what you eat, you will stimulate GIP. GIP triggers a spike in insulin.
With the keto diet, you will stimulate certain genes that will help you in various ways. With ketosis, you will have some autophagy, but not as much as you would with fasting.

| 0:21.6 | Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto and Interminute Fasting Podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. I want to talk about the difference between fasting and keto and which one is |
| 0:49.5 | better. I had this question come up underneath one of the descriptions of my YouTube videos, so I'm |
| 0:55.2 | to just talk about it. So when we talk about keto, we're talking about low carb. Now, you could do |
| 1:01.3 | keto with zero carb. You could do that, but most people have just a small amount of carb. They might |
| 1:07.5 | have it between 20 and 50 grams. But when you're doing fasting, you're bringing it down to |
| 1:13.3 | no carbs because you're not eating anything. Okay, so just for the fact that you have no carbs |
| 1:18.5 | means that you're going to have way more ketones than when you actually do keto, if you compare |
| 1:23.2 | them together. Now, with keto, you're going to be eating at a certain frequency. And every time you |
| 1:29.9 | eat, regardless of what you eat, if there's any significance of calories, you're going to |
| 1:34.9 | stimulate something called GIP. That's in the small intestine. That triggers a spike in insulin. |
| 1:43.9 | So even though you're consuming low carbohydrates, |
| 1:47.5 | you are stimulating insulin when you eat to a certain degree. But over here, when you're |
| 1:52.8 | fasting, there is no GIP stimulated. So you're going to have a lot lower insulin and a lot more |
| 1:59.1 | ketones that are generated. |
| 2:01.3 | All right, next thing is that when you actually are in ketones, |
| 2:04.3 | you will stimulate certain genes that will help you in various ways. |
| 2:09.4 | But when you're fasting, you actually enhance even additional genes that have to do with survival, |
| 2:15.9 | and definitely have to do with anti-aging and longevity, |
| 2:21.5 | which will help the brain become more focused and the heart to become more efficient. |
