In this podcast, we're going to talk about fasting and diabetes. I want to cover the fasting effects on a diabetic's eyes.
In a study done on mice, researchers found that fasting had a protective effect on the retina and other nerves. The retina is nerve tissue. They found that fasting improves the microbiome (your friendly bacteria). It causes the microbes to change bile salts to a compound called TUDCA, which then gives protection to your nerves.
If you're a diabetic, you could have problems with the vascular supply to the nerves. The nerves can start to die in the fingertips, toes, eyes, and kidneys. TUDCA counters the damage to the nerves not just in the eyes but in other nerves as well.
What causes this problem originally is the high levels of sugar that a diabetic is living with. Sugar is very corrosive, and it can destroy the nervous system.
When you're fasting, you're cutting out sugar and normalizing your insulin levels. When you fast, your microbes improve.
With fasting your microbes:
• Start to increase the resistance to oxidative stress
• Diversify
• Live longer
• Tolerate pathogens better
Making your microbes stronger can also:
• Help you produce certain byproducts that help your blood sugars and improve insulin resistance
• Make more vitamins
• More immune protection

| 0:21.6 | Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto and Interminute Fasting Podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. I want to talk about the fasting effects on a diabetic's eye. Now, just to be |
| 0:48.9 | transparent, the study that I'm basing this on was done on mice. So if you actually do have some pet mice that |
| 0:56.6 | need better vision because they're diabetic, you can apply this. This is what they found. There was |
| 1:02.7 | a protective effect on the retina and other nerves. The retina is nerve tissue. It's basically |
| 1:09.4 | your brain extending in your eye socket. This is what they found. This is actually quite interesting. |
| 1:16.9 | Fasting improves the microbiome. The microbiome are your friendly bacteria. It causes these microbes to modify change bile acids or bile salts to this specific compound right here, |
| 1:34.5 | which then gives protection to your nerves. So if you're a diabetic, you're going to have |
| 1:42.2 | problems with the vascular supply, the capillaries to |
| 1:45.7 | the nerves. The nerves are going to start to die off slowly in the fingertips, in the toes, |
| 1:50.1 | in the eyes, and the kidney. And so this compound counters the damage to the nerve, not just |
| 1:59.6 | in the eye, but other nerves as well. Now, that would make sense because |
| 2:04.6 | what's causing this problem originally is the high level of sugar that a diabetic is living with. |
| 2:12.6 | Okay, so sugar is very corrosive. It kind of rust out the nervous system, the inside of the body, it destroys it. |
| 2:18.7 | So you're basically not eating, so you're going to eliminate this as well as drop and |
| 2:24.3 | normalize your insulin levels. But what's even more fascinating about this is that when you |
| 2:29.9 | fast, your microbes actually improve. It's fascinating. They start to increase the resistance to oxidative |
| 2:39.5 | stress. They start to diversify. They actually build up their community. They become stronger. |
| 2:47.2 | You would think if you starve them, they would die off faster. No, they live longer, okay? |
| 2:53.1 | Because there are certain genes that kick in that are survival genes. And obviously, they've been |
