Welcome to the art of charm. I'm your host Jordan Harbinger. I'm here with producer Jason

0:04.4

to Philip O. We're hanging out in San Francisco in person. Not bad. Kind of fun.

0:08.5

A little company retreat here at the art of charm. We may not have all the answers,

0:12.4

but we certainly have some of the questions today on Fan Amel Friday. Those questions come from you.

0:16.9

And then we'll do our best to get you answers. Advice, horse play,

0:20.8

admonishment, tough love, etc. And today has been awesome because we're hanging out in,

0:27.4

we're doing a little podcast retreat here where we can brainstorm and plan for the next year.

0:32.8

And there's just some sort of magical bandwidth working in person that we just don't have online.

0:38.9

You can't get this from Slack. No, you just can't Skype Slack, etc. You're just making sure

0:44.1

we're all on the same page and having a beer or 10 over the course of a weekend is also a pretty

one of my colleagues at university about finding jobs in the field. At first he had nothing for me,

1:05.0

but a week or so later he emailed me with an offer of a warm introduction to a guy who works at

1:09.6

a huge chemical company. As he puts it, I know this guy, albeit not well, but we overlapped a bit.

1:15.6

Do you want an introduction? I said, of course I do. It can't hurt, but at the same time I have

1:19.8

little to no idea on what I should do with this opportunity. Do I simply ask him about what it's

1:24.9

like to work for the company? How do I ask if he's heard of any available jobs? Do I talk about

1:29.6

myself or look up his PhD work? I'm nervous about wasting an opportunity that someone else,

1:34.5

whom I respect, is willing to put forward for me. Thanks for all you do at AOC. Signed,

concerned, chemist. PS, hey Jason's still listening to Grumpy Old Geeks. Keep up the good grump.

1:44.4

Nice. You got a couple of grump fellow grumps here. All right. So here's what I recommend in
