In the lead up to our summer season, we are dropping a few fan favorites in the feed,

and I'd like to set this next one up by telling you a story that happened to me about 20 years

ago in a maximum security prison.

So this was my first job at a college for prison monitoring group in New York where I live,

and my job was to visit all the medium and maximum security prisons in the state and

talk to the inmates with mental illness, or the people on the mental health caseload,

as they called it.

I had surveys, I carried a clipboard, I wore a suit that was too big for me.

I had no background in psychology or in prisons, but the person who picked me for this job,

a criminal justice professor, thought that I had a good way with people.

And so I'd pretty confidently stroll into the prison, find the people on my list, and

talk to them.

Ask them about their situation and their medical care.

Afterwards I take my notes back to the office, name, diagnosis, maybe something about them.
