Welcome back to the next picture show, a movie of the week podcast devoted to a classic film and the way it shaped our thoughts on a recent release.

Our usual co-host, Scott Tobias, is off raising giant pillbugs to be riding animals. We keep telling him that is a bad investment, but he just won't listen. On last week's show, we talked about The Last Unicorn, Jules Bass, and Arthur Rankin Jr.'s' 1984 animated film, adapting Peter S. Beagle's best-selling fantasy novel about a unicorn and a quest to find out what happened to the rest of her kind.

This week's last of her kind fantasy creature is in a different position. She knows exactly what happened to her people, and she doesn't actually know that they can be saved.

She's just trying to stop the incomprehensible force that turn them all to stone before the last survivors of humanity go the way of the dragons before them.

Raya opens in a post-apocalyptic landscape where the title character, a human teenager named

Raya, voiced by the Star Wars series neglected co-star, Kelly Marie Tron, is off on a quest looking

for the last dragon.

In a previous generation, a malevolent power called the Drune began turning people in dragons

to stone, until the dragon

Sisu, voiced by pop musician and the farewell star Aquafina, created a stone from her magic and

drove the Dron back. When that stone is shattered and the pieces are claimed by the five warring

tribes of Raya's broken kingdom, she finds and revives Sisu, and they set out to reclaim the pieces

of the stone and defeat the

Deroon again. It's a classic video game fetch quest, complete with periodic power-ups for Sisu,

and an episodic story where Raya and Sisu gain new companions at every stop. But it's really
