my niece, a 15-year-old organizer in Los Angeles, flew with a friend to Washington, D.C. to

participate in a workshop with Students Demand Action. Now, Students Demand Action is part of

Shannon Watts's great group, Mom's Demand Action, which was conceived of as a grassroots

organization to fight the NRA and the gun lobby and fight for public safety measures to protect

people from gun violence. A few hours after she arrived, the news broke of the mass murder by a

suspected white nationalist terrorist in El Paso. My niece quickly organized a small march on the

Capitol and then joined up with a massive demonstration throughout the city and ultimately on the

White House itself. She and the other members of Students Demand then went to bed only to be

woken up a few hours later with the news of yet another mass murder, this time by a suspected male

supremacist terrorist in Dayton, Ohio. She and the group again went and demonstrated and then

finally, my niece texted me. She sounded drained, which is rare for her. It just seems to never end.

Anyway, we're all drained today and after a week in which dozens of people were killed across

three far-flung states where the suspects are all three white men. They did things like keep

rape lists and spell out Trump's name and assault rifles for their Facebook page. We just are all

exhausted. Fortunately, I have a guest with a giant mind today who never seems to get exhausted.
