Life, obviously, is easier with money. Without having to scrabble and hustle just to survive,

you can be free to pursue whatever interests and fascinations you like. But wealth doesn't make

you immune to the realities of human life. Families still have drama, hearts still get broken,

dreams still get ruined.

This week's story is about someone who started life with every possible advantage, but still

descended into darkness.

This is Falling Star, the murder of Gregory DeVillers.

Music So, campers, for this one, we're in Southern California.

On a beautiful day in June 2001, Kristen Rossum made what was by now a familiar journey,

walking across the U.S. Mexico border at San Ysidro to go and

buy some meth. She'd called ahead so that her dealer, a taxi driver named Armando, would be waiting,

and they took a 10-minute drive to his connection. Back home, she smoked all through the night,

barely sleeping, and in the morning this beautiful, accomplished

young woman got the call she'd been dreading. The San Diego PD had just issued a warrant

for her arrest for the murder of her husband Greg in the previous November. It seemed

unthinkable that this child of privilege could end up here, and yet there she was. By the end of the day,

Kristen was in handcuffs, and she would never be free again. Kristen Rossum was born in

1976 to high-flying parents in Memphis, Tennessee. Her dad, Ralph, was granted tenure in the

University's Department of Political Science when he was just 32 32 and was starting to build national renown in his field.
